Penis Enhancement: The Long and the Short of It

penis-enlargement-1Is it really possible to enlarge your yoo-hoo? Dr Craig Shaw reports on the method’s available to enhance your manhood – while debunking some serious penis extender myths.

Though almost every guy I know will readily joke about sex, women, and parts of the human anatomy, a high proportion of those same men are actually extremely shy about their male assets. Awareness, often related to public and pornographic media or a comment from an acquaintance – can lead to feelings of inadequacy when compared to some perceived ideal.

Though this may be unrealistic, to the victim secretly brooding on apparent inadequacy, this will affect multiple aspects of his life… and definitely curtail a happy and fulfilled public and private life experience. As techniques borrowed from the cosmetic and reconstructive world are refined and perfected, considerable aesthetic improvements are now safely possible for those that recognize the need and desire relief. Like all cosmetic surgery, the strictest attention to detail is mandatory, and yields consistent improvements.

Measuring Up

Obviously, as most requests for cosmetic male enhancement predominantly focus on increasing size, the logical first step must be to ascertain a normal range. In medical terms, this has varied according to the method of measurement, the population measured, as well as researcher tolerances.

It seems on averaging the many studies (and excluding age and geographic variances), the average stretched flaccid penis is 11cm – and the average erect penis is 12.5cm. This is measured from the base of the shaft at abdominal side (opposite to the scrotum) to the tip.

The average flaccid circumference (thickness) is 10cm, whilst the average erect circumference is 12.5cm. But exactly where the various researchers take these measurements is either different, or not clearly stated.

But if we face facts, not many men do exact measurements based on reproducible scientific norms. The truth is that if a man feels small or inadequate, his confidence – as well as his sexual self-image and satisfaction suffer. This may seriously affect an otherwise fulfilling relationship. As sex and self-image is such an emotive and private concept, the effects can be devastating.

 Does Size Matter?

At this juncture, the point must be made that in fact a large penis as desired by most men is not necessarily perceived as more attractive by most ladies. A longer penis seldom increases sexual pleasure, though increased girth may definitely play such a role.

This is, of course, excluding those suffering from true micropenis.

A further distinction must also be made between so-called “growers” and “showers” as both ultimately have similar erect penile sizes.

This fact remains of scant comfort to the guy with the smallest package in the gents shower at the local gym.

How Do You Know If You’re A Candidate For Enhancement?

Simply put, if you can tolerate an operation and understand fully the outcomes and possible problems that can occur – you qualify. Considering the emotive nature of these shortcomings, a full and frank discussion with any prospective surgeon or other is prudent.

Imagine the stress of no improvement, or at worst, a bad outcome in this area. Do as much research as you would for any other topic of such importance.

What is available?

An internet search yields many sites that grab the attention, but actually merely attempt to peddle sex toys and other products. Others offer creams, patches and potions with claims of secret exotic and ancient mysterious magic… all of which have no effect whatever.

However, the real possible contenders are; Penile vacuum pumps.

No actual permanent increase in length or girth has ever been shown. Despite this fact, 30% of users still claim such an increase. As the core aim is that of increased confidence, this placebo effect may hold some promise.

Weights

As with pumps, there is no proven gain. Possible injury, coupled with a macabre appearance and difficulty of use make this option relatively rare in use.

“Cock Rings”& Clampings

Applying these after erection has been induced to keep blood in the shaft and increase size – but it’s not effective and can be dangerous. This is at times used as a sexual adventure, but has no enhancement characteristics. It is thus best avoided.

Jelqing

This comprises proximal to distal massages, and thus claims a growth advantage. Using this theory, I could massage my legs from thigh to toes to grow taller…obvious nonsense.

Surgery

The only proven and durable increase is thus possible with surgery. This naturally has all the drawbacks incumbent of such delicate operations, as well as possible complications.

Increase in Length

A portion of the shaft length previously hidden under the pubic bone can be “unearthed” by dissection of the suspensory ligament. Extra skin may be gained from your foreskin or from the skin above the base – as well as a small Z-Plasty to release the sack at the lower side. Other refinements are fat flaps placed to stop automatic re-attachment.

This is effective with a gain of 2.5 cm being realistic, and is mostly noted in the flaccid state. A sizable “gain” in length is often noticed with reduction of the fat pad above the penis and at the lower abdomen. Again, this gain is maximal in the soft state.

Increase in Girth

The most popular and commonly used method is that of micro fat harvesting and grafting by means of special injection cannula and techniques. This is durable, can be repeated, is safe, and has the advantage of minimal scarring. It also has the benefit of donor site liposuction.

Alternatives are that of a thin skin and fat “sandwich”, with the outer skin layer removed. This entails it being wrapped around a part of the shaft under your skin.

It yields an excellent, smooth and firm result, but has greater scarring. Unfortunately it does cut sensory nerves and has a donor scar. Off the shelf skin substitutes can be used, but are thin as well as temporary. It is also extremely expensive.

All these techniques have their champions, and all will yield good results when performed by an experienced and careful surgeon. All will lose some volume over time, and a steady size state is reached at about 6 months.

Post-Operative Downtime

As with all operations, early care and cleaning is vital. I insist on regular follow-ups, and do the dressings myself to be able to monitor healing and progress. Time off work varies from 1 to 2 weeks, depending on occupation. A penile rehabilitation protocol must be followed, but full sexual activity is probably best avoided for about 6 weeks. Pain is minimal to moderate, and is well controlled by oral medicines.

With adequate information and healthy realism, much can be gained with male enhancement surgery. A relatively small physical increase often results in massive confidence gains.
