Dullstroom is traditional farming land, first cultivated by Dutch settlers in the 1880s. They formed a community that was proclaimed a town in 1892 by Paul Kruger, when Dullstroom boasted all of 48 residents, eight houses, three stables, 10 cattle kraals and a trading store.
Its famous fishing industry dates back to the early 1900s, when a trout-like fish called Fingerling was caught in a river; some hatchlings were released into local streams, and later, the municipal dams were also stocked with 17 000 fingerlings – and fishermen have been in raptures about Dullstroom ever since.
Walkersons Hotel & Spa, a perfect blend of elegance and charm, was built in 1993, and is beautifully positioned in the softly rolling hills of Mpumalanga with stunning views, early misty mornings and languid country sunsets. Walkersons is a haven of serenity with elegant dining rooms, a gorgeous terrace, the cosy Peggy’s Bar and lovely lawns leading to the hidden swimming pool. Its stylish, old world country atmosphere continues in the bedroom suites with elegant décor, tastefully appointed bathrooms and large verandas to enjoy the glorious views.
Walkersons Hotel & Spa offers five-star indulgence with 27 standard rooms, 12 Lakeside suites and 11 luxury Lakeside suites. The Family and Manor Suites are suitable for families, while the Honeymoon Suite is the ultimate luxury retreat with king size four-poster bed, a Jacuzzi and a wood-burning fireplace.
For those who prefer the independence of self-catering, there are seven fully furnished, self-catering spacious cottages situated in primelocations at varying distances from the main hotel, all with a sense of seclusion and tranquility and their own unique character and name. A cut above the others are two Walkersons’ signature luxury self-catering units, uniquely designed to provide both comfort and privacy for a family vacation.
Whispering Waters is a magnificent house situated above the river with sweeping views across the estate, and the one-of-a-kind Waterfall Cottage, situated on top of a hill overlooking the rumbling, roaring, cascading waters of the dam.
Delicious cuisine has long been one of Walkersons’ biggest attractions – dining is an indulgent affair in The Flying Scotsman, with the chefs presenting a four-course dinner every evening. You can take in the views and experience the lighter side of dining at the Terrace Restaurant, where traditional full breakfasts and light lunches, catering for adults and children, are served. Alternatively you can enjoy the famous Walkersons scones at afternoon teatime overlooking the rose gardens, or a specially prepared picnic hamper to be enjoyed down by the river.
The days won’t be long enough to fit in all the possible activities that this country lifestyle offers – with a favourite activity being fly-fishing in the well-stocked trout dams that Dullstroom is famous for, or a mountain bike ride or hike through the beautiful countryside. And as pure indulgence is part of the experience at Walkersons, the Walkersons Spa with its skilled therapists, a sauna and three treatment rooms where single or couple treatments can be enjoyed, is also worthy of a visit.
Walkersons, a recipient of the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence awards from 2013 to 2018, is an easy and attractive drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, making it ideal for a luxurious weekend break in the country – and is the perfect venue for a wedding or a business conference.
